Friends,
We are quickly approaching the one year anniversary of becoming a family. It has been a
challenging year, but also the best year of our lives.
Samm (Hao Zhou) is growing (finally), and his personality has emerged—and let me tell
you, he is one “in-charge” little guy. Our home is filled with plenty of silli-ness and laughter.
His speech is coming along very slowly, but we are now able to understand at least some
of what he says. His hearing aides have helped to improve his speech, but we know this
will be a long road to develop his speech and catch him up with his peers. He will start
school again in a few weeks, which he is very excited about. Samm is truly the joy of our
lives, and we cannot imagine our lives without him.
Once again, we cannot thank you and your staff enough for the amazing care and love
Samm received while at TCH. We just went for a follow-up appointment for his cleft lip
and palate, and our surgeon again remarked on how well his palate looked. He said that
Samm had a “very fine surgeon” in China.
Sincerely,
- Samm and family |

Dear Friends,
I thought I would let you know that Mao Xinche, Adrianna, is doing well.
She is a happy little girl who loves to play jokes on her brothers (like offering
them a bite of something only to pull it back laughing when they try to
take a bite.)

Friends,
It seems like it has already been months, but we are coming up to our two month anniversary
of having our beautiful Huan with us. She is a hilarious little girl that can’t get enough of mimicking
her jiejie and acting like the family jester. She does the silliest things to make us
laugh.
We had her first cardio appointment two weeks ago and they did the EKG, Echo, blood, sat,
etc. The doctor said she wanted to do the surgery soon based on her SATs-77. Then we
had her catherization on Tuesday—they were impressed with the surgery that was completed
in China and actually were a little surprised that part of the Fontan was actually completed
during the initial surgery. (I have heard this before and wonder if the Chinese and
American protocols are different for the ASD.) Huan came though all the tests like a trouper
and really didn’t complain about much—of course when it was time to leave the hospital she
kept saying |
|
| GOGOGOGOGOGOGO—Home Momma!! So we got out of there. Of course in a few weeks when we were there for her Fontan and it will be a 7—10 day stay, I’m sure she’ll be ready to get out of
there even quicker. The doctors feel that she is an ideal candidate for her next surgery and they have every confidence
that she will recover quickly. |
| |
| She is speaking a ton at home—little sentences—usually requesting food or beverages. She gives us hugs and kisses
all the time now and she is still just the most appreciative child I have ever met—if we give her a candy, apple or shoes
or a toy—she just lights up and says “hank ee.” She loves to sing the ABCs and is really quite good at English names—
even now and then a Chinese word slips in and we try to look it up and usually it ‘s pretty close to what we believe it to
be. We have a Chinese channel on our cable and sometimes when we put it on she gets interested, but if anyone
speaks in Mandarin to her she wants nothing to do with it. Hopefully that will change over time. |
| |
| Huan loves swimming in our lake and she can’t get enough time on our boat. She embraces all of the new experiences
that come her way and she really doesn’t seem scared of anything anymore...such an amazing girl. |
| |
| Take care, |
| |
| - Huan and her family |
