Bu Yan
Look Beyond
She has a smile that draws, a determination that intrigues, and a love that captivates. Bu Yan was born July 24, 2007 with MMC Spina Bifida. MMC sometimes causes hydrocephalus (water on the brain) as well as paralysis. Although she has both symptoms, her positive attitude, loving kindness, and encouraging spirit force you to look beyond what your eyes can see. A shunt was placed in her head to drain the water from her brain to her stomach. Her paralysis is in the bottom half of her legs and feet. With the support of her braces, shoes, and encouragement from her caretakers, she is learning to walk. She is determined and positive. In February 2010 she could walk with help from an adult. By April 2010, she could walk across the room with no help. If she falls down, she giggles and picks herself back up to finish the walk. She always reaches her goal.
She has worn out two pairs of shoes in the last 6 months and is quite proud of it. She understands she is different from some of the children. She understands their differences as well. She is very smart and intuitive. Before she was transitioned to foster care, she would take Ai Dao's hand (Ai Dao is blind) and put it on her face and say her name. She began doing this after the staff explained to her that Ai Dao could not see. Bu Yan put her hands over her eyes to see what this might be like. She would give him toys to hold and play with. She seemed to understand that he could not see to get the toys himself. The staff at True Children's Home hears Ai Dao say her name quite often. They were friends. She took care of him and he trusted her. Ai Dao could not see her smile, but he certainly felt her love. Bu Yan was transitioned to the nearby True Children's Home foster village in early April where she has stolen the hearts of her foster family. She is visited weekly by our Foster Care Coordinator.
Bu Yan's file is on the shared list with CCAA. Our wish for Bu Yan in 2010 is that she will have a forever family.

Sarah (Hong Cao)
Dear Friends,
It seems at times that our trip to China to meet Sarah (Hong Cao), was so so long ago. She flutters around the house doing the "Sarah spin", and loves most all the foods that she has encountered. Little Sarah is still very fond of soup (toup:), and also of tea. Mommy sometimes forgets this and doesn't make those fond items part of her everyday meals. The last 8 months have breezed by so quickly, Sarah recovered from surgery on her palate and nose in late January. She is not at all shy and will walk up to strangers and ask their names and introduce herself. If asked her name she will respond sometimes with a laugh and "Sarah Chubby Cheeks." We love her smiles, they light up her face. She is very fond of monkeys, with the sock monkey being a constant companion. Most recently, she started swim lessons and is delighted to be in the water.
We are so very thankful for the dedicated staff at True Children's Home. The love and attention they have given Sarah is obvious in her ability to show her love towards us. We are thankful for Sarah's foster parents who cared for her and we know she must miss them, even though it is hard for her to express this.
Grateful for all these blessings,

Jax (Ai Zhe)

Jax is doing so, so, so, incredibly awesome!!!!!!!!!! I truly cannot emphasize that enough! He is an amazing little boy and we love him so much and are so blessed that he is a part of OUR family-we couldn't imagine life without him!
Jax is already speaking in long sentences and nearly paragraphs in English. The only thing he still says in Chinese is the word for going to bed and that is it. We can't believe how quickly his English has come along and although I am sad that he is losing his Chinese, I am so glad that we have a common language and can understand each other so well!
We went to Kindergarten Round-Up a few weeks ago and he is registered to begin all-day Kindergarten in the fall. He absolutely loves school and thrives in this environment. He has made so many friends in just the six weeks he has been going to the Jumpstart Pre-K program since arriving home and all the kids accepted him with open arms just as if he had been there all year! It has been amazing to watch him blossom everyday and to see his potential. He is such a smart little boy and we know he is going to succeed in whatever he does!
Jax is so mild-tempered, hardly ever gets upset, and really never gets frustrated with things that are more difficult for him due to his right hand difference. He is just a laid-back, easy going little boy who has an amazing smile, a contagious laugh, and a magnetic personality! He is fitting right in with our family and is bonding well with both of us.

Charles (Hong Men)
It has been almost a year since Charles came to our house. The time justflies by.
Charles is doing very well. His English is improving day by day. He is
going to pre-school since last summer. He has many friends at school. His
teacher says he is very likable. He is full of energy. He loves playing
with Thomas the Tank Engine train set. He also loves cars and trucks.
Thank you for telling us the story about Charles and Hong Cao when they were
in China. Charles misses her too. We hope Charles and Hong Cao will see each
other again in the near future.
